On a train to London, retired policeman Luke Fitzwilliam meets Lavinia Pinkerton, who says that several deaths in her village were murders and that she knows who will be killed next. When she dies before reaching Scotland Yard, Luke travels to Wychwood under an assumed purpose to test her claim.

The village offers numerous plausible grudges and a pattern of deaths disguised as accident or illness. With assistance from Bridget Conway and eventual involvement from Superintendent Battle, Luke must abandon assumptions about what a murderer should look like and recognise how social deference allows violence to remain invisible in an apparently peaceful interwar community.
