Norfolk, 1940. Prue, Thea and their neighbours in Great Plumstead are increasingly absorbed by the practical work of war, from the Women’s Voluntary Service mobile canteen to salvage drives and clothing collections. The community that adapted to evacuation now faces the greater fear and suspicion produced by invasion scares and rapidly changing wartime regulations.
Thea opens Rookery House to Anna, a young German refugee who has fled the regime in her own country. Although many villagers accept her, others treat her nationality as evidence of danger. When the authorities detain Anna as a possible enemy alien, the women must decide whether loyalty to their vulnerable neighbour can survive the pressure of wartime security. The novel centres on friendship and community action during the uncertain months of 1940.
