October 1940. After narrowly surviving an air raid during the Blitz, VAD nurse Evie leaves London for Norfolk and takes a post at the newly opened hospital at Great Plumstead Hall. She finds a home at Rookery House, where the village is also receiving mothers and children displaced by bombing.
Evie begins to build a more independent life while Prue, Thea and other local women support evacuees and contribute to the war effort through WVS work and community activities. Her security is threatened when a hospital patient recognises her from the life she has tried to leave behind, forcing Evie to confront secrets that could follow her into the new community.
