March 1941. After losing her family in the Manchester Christmas Blitz, Flo Butterworth leaves the city and joins the Women's Land Army. She arrives at Rookery House in Norfolk hoping to make a new start and to put her experience and love of gardening to practical use.
As the war intensifies, food production becomes increasingly important. Thea buys another field for crops, while Prue organises members of the Mother's Day Club and Women's Institute to reclaim a derelict allotment. Construction of a nearby aerodrome brings further disruption and new residents to Rookery House. When an enemy aircraft crashes nearby, Flo is forced to help German airmen who may be connected with the bombing that destroyed her family, confronting grief and resentment that she had hoped to leave behind.
