Norfolk, 1944. Land Girls Phylly and Gracie have become close friends while working at Catchetts Farm, where long days, shortages and uncertainty are part of ordinary wartime life. Gracie worries about her airman husband, while Phylly tries to help Jimmy, a London evacuee who has remained guarded about his past.
The arrival of Edwin, an American airman with secrets of his own, changes the balance within their small community. As the women continue the demanding agricultural work on which the home front depends, personal loyalties are tested by separation, fear and the possibility of loss. The novel places friendship and family relationships within the practical routines of the Women’s Land Army and rural wartime Britain.
