The Mother’s Day Club
Norfolk, 1939. The residents of Great Plumstead volunteer to receive evacuees from London and prepare themselves for displaced children. Instead, the train brings expectant mothers who need shelter away from the threatened capital, forcing the village to improvise accommodation and confront very different ideas about duty, respectability and wartime disruption.
Sisters Prue and Thea help organise the response and welcome the newcomers, including Marianne, who hopes the evacuation will give her and her unborn child a fresh start. Her circumstances, however, are not something she can safely reveal to everyone around her. As Britain enters war, the women form new friendships while managing pregnancy, family expectations and community suspicion, turning civil-defence work into a test of how far neighbours are willing to protect one another.
