Christmas in wartime East London finds Frankie, Winnie and Bella continuing their work with the ambulance crew at Station Seventy-Five. Frankie is struggling with family difficulties, while Winnie worries about her husband Mac, whose bomb-disposal work exposes him to danger every day. Bella, meanwhile, is growing closer to Winnie’s brother James as she becomes more confident in the life she has made for herself.
The Blitz and its aftermath shape every part of the women’s lives, from emergency calls to absent loved ones and improvised celebrations. Their friendship provides the stability that war repeatedly threatens to remove, while the novel follows the mixture of fear, work, romance and make-do-and-mend resilience that defines Christmas on the Home Front.
