The Last Warrior
Mercia, late ninth century. Coelwulf II has driven the Vikings from Repton, but victory has left him with a kingdom that is still dangerously exposed. His enemies remain active, his available warriors are few, and protecting Mercia requires him to defend several fronts at once.
Coelwulf divides the men he trusts most and sends them against threats that could undo everything won in the previous campaign. The decision leaves the king with little margin for failure and forces him to weigh the survival of individual warriors against the survival of Mercia itself. The novel follows a ruler fighting to preserve an increasingly fragile kingdom at a time when Viking pressure and rival ambitions are reshaping Anglo-Saxon England.
