The Battle of Shiloh

by Captivating History Book 8 in the Battles of the Civil War series.

4.0(137)

The Battle of Shiloh examines the violent two-day engagement fought in Tennessee on 6–7 April 1862. Confederate forces under Albert Sidney Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard struck Ulysses S. Grant’s army near Pittsburg Landing before it could fully unite with Don Carlos Buell, hoping to reverse Union advances into the Confederate interior.

The surprise attack drove Union troops back through camps and wooded ground, but Grant maintained a defensive position near the Tennessee River. Johnston was killed during the fighting, and Confederate momentum weakened as the day continued. Reinforced overnight by Buell, the Union army counterattacked on 7 April and forced Beauregard to withdraw towards Corinth. The enormous casualties shocked both sides and demonstrated that the western war would not be decided by a short series of easy victories.
