The Battle of Chancellorsville examines the fighting in Virginia from 30 April to 6 May 1863, when Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia confronted Joseph Hooker’s larger Army of the Potomac. Lee divided his forces in the face of superior numbers, while Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson carried out the flank march that struck the Union right and produced one of the Confederacy’s most celebrated tactical successes.

The book follows the plans of both armies, the fighting around the Wilderness and Chancellorsville crossroads, and the simultaneous battle at Fredericksburg. It also considers the severe cost of Confederate victory, particularly Jackson’s accidental wounding by his own men and subsequent death. Chancellorsville strengthened Lee’s confidence before the Gettysburg campaign, but the loss of Jackson deprived the Confederate army of one of its most effective commanders at a critical point in the war.
