The Battle of Atlanta
The Battle of Atlanta examines the fighting around the city in July 1864 during William T. Sherman’s campaign through Georgia. Atlanta was an important railway and industrial centre for the Confederacy, and its defence became a major objective for General John Bell Hood’s Army of Tennessee as Union forces tightened their approach.
The book follows the commanders, troop movements and battlefield decisions of the July 22 battle, including the Confederate assault against the Army of the Tennessee and the death of Union general James B. McPherson. Although the Confederates failed to break Sherman’s armies, the battle did not immediately decide possession of the city; operations continued until Atlanta fell in early September. The campaign’s military outcome also had major political consequences by strengthening Northern confidence in eventual Union victory.
