The Battle of Chickamauga
The Battle of Chickamauga examines the major clash fought in northern Georgia on 19–20 September 1863 between William Rosecrans’s Army of the Cumberland and Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee. Confederate reinforcements under James Longstreet helped give Bragg numerical strength at a moment when both armies were manoeuvring for control of Chattanooga.
A mistaken Union movement opened a gap that Longstreet’s assault exploited, breaking much of Rosecrans’s line. George H. Thomas organised a stubborn defence on Horseshoe Ridge that allowed many Union troops to withdraw and earned him the name “Rock of Chickamauga.” The Confederate victory was one of the most significant in the Western Theater, but Bragg failed to destroy the Union army. Its retreat into Chattanooga instead set the stage for siege and for the later battles that restored Union control of the region.
