May 1940. British intelligence officer James Barron is in France when the German invasion shatters the country and separates the de Gruchy family whose hospitality he has recently enjoyed. Barron escapes through Dunkirk and is later transferred into the newly created Special Operations Executive.

His work sends agents back into occupied France, including members of the de Gruchy family. Barron’s responsibility for clandestine operations is complicated by his love for one of the sisters, forcing him to balance personal attachment against the risks of sabotage, resistance activity and German reprisals.
