China, 1926. Widowed writer Joan Carter arrives to research the life of the late Empress Dowager Cixi and becomes involved with Geoffrey Marne, a man she initially distrusts. Their relationship develops while warlords, foreign interests and competing political factions struggle for control of the republic. Violence separates them just after they acknowledge their attachment.
Joan is drawn into kidnapping, imprisonment and Japanese brutality as she attempts to survive and find Geoffrey again. Her search moves through a country in which no authority can guarantee safety and every alliance may change. The novel links the private uncertainty of a second love with the wider movement from the Warlord Era towards Japanese expansion and the next phase of war in China.
