Bloody Sun

The Bloody Sun novels follow two generations of the Barrett family inside the making of modern Japan. Bloody Sunrise begins with a British naval officer shipwrecked in 1861, adopted into Japanese society and employed in the creation of a modern navy during the political upheaval that produces the Meiji state.

Bloody Sunset turns that achievement into a darker inheritance. A descendant raised as a Japanese naval officer confronts the militarisation of the 1930s, war in China and the widening Pacific conflict. Together the books trace the movement from coerced opening and state reform to imperial expansion and total war.
