In 1914 Leonora’s brother Ralph and her fiancé Tom enter the war while her previous Balkan nursing experience initially leaves her confined to England. She and Victoria eventually join the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry in France, where ambulance work, typhoid and air attack replace the adventure they once imagined. Leonora remains emotionally committed to the Serbian officer Sasha Malkovic despite the marriage arranged for him by his family.
Her decision to return towards Serbia places love and medical duty against the wishes of the men who expect to direct her life. On the Western Front, Tom and Ralph are also forced to reconsider the relationship and future they have been taught to conceal. The novel follows several forms of forbidden attachment through a war that makes private honesty more difficult even as danger removes the certainty of time. It was republished as Frontline Nurses On Duty under the name Holly Green.
