In 1912 Leonora Malham Brown feels trapped by the expectations of her prosperous London family. Her friendship with the independent Victoria Langford introduces her to the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry and to Mabel Stobart’s women volunteers. When war breaks out in the Balkans, the two young women leave England to assist wounded Bulgarian soldiers despite repeated warnings that respectable women do not belong near a battlefield.

The medical work strips away their romantic assumptions about adventure while giving Leonora a purpose unavailable at home. Disguising herself in practical clothes and resisting her brother Ralph’s plans for her marriage, she encounters Colonel Aleksander “Sasha” Malkovic and begins a relationship complicated by class, nationality and political obligation. The novel was later republished under Hilary Green’s Holly Green pen name as Frontline Nurses.
