Jasper Shrig’s presence turns the inheritance plot into a problem of concealed danger as Sam learns that rank cannot be possessed simply by accepting a title. Farnol contrasts practical seamanship and physical courage with the codes of Georgian landed society, asking whether the qualities that kept Sam alive at sea can help him survive a hostile family inheritance. The story is continued in My Lord of Wrybourne.
