Peregrine’s Progress

by Jeffery Farnol Book 1 in the Jasper Shrig Mysteries series.

First published 1922

3.6(22)

Nineteen-year-old Peregrine Vereker escapes the careful protection of his aunt and sets out at night to discover a life beyond the rules that have kept him sheltered. The roads of early nineteenth-century England bring him into contact with gypsies, rogues, fighters, rural eccentrics and a young woman whose presence turns independence into responsibility. His journey gradually becomes more dangerous than the romantic adventure he imagined.

The novel returns to the road-world Farnol established in The Broad Highway while introducing Bow Street investigator Jasper Shrig as a recurring figure. Shrig’s watchful intelligence adds a criminal undercurrent to Peregrine’s coming-of-age story, linking romance and picaresque travel with secrets that require investigation. Later novels increasingly move Shrig toward the centre of murder and inheritance mysteries.
