Cousins Roland Verinder and Oliver Dale are sent into the world with only fifty-two guineas and the expectation that they must discover what kind of men they are without the shelter of inherited ease. Their search for a livelihood brings rural work, rivalry, friendship and romance, while an apparently straightforward effort to make their fortunes opens into darker questions of violence and hidden motive.
The novel links Farnol’s familiar open-road and country-life themes with the recurring presence of Jasper Shrig. The cousins’ choices are measured against a Georgian world in which rank, money and personal reputation still determine opportunity, but where character is revealed by work and loyalty rather than birth alone. The story also begins a looser group of connected characters later revisited in The Happy Harvest and Waif of the River.
