October 1471. Edward IV has restored Yorkist rule, while Margaret Beaufort’s son Henry Tudor remains in exile. Margaret survives by keeping her ambitions concealed, but someone inside the circle she depends upon appears to be betraying her. Her clerk Christopher Urswicke is ordered to discover the traitor before more of her supporters are killed.

The murder of Jacob Cromart inside St Michael’s Church gives Urswicke an apparently impossible crime: the victim had claimed sanctuary, the doors were locked and no obvious weapon or intruder can be found. Solving the mechanics of the killing is only part of the problem, because the murderer’s purpose is tied to the dangerous network sustaining Margaret’s hopes for Henry Tudor.
