Anglo-Sikh Wars

1845–1849 CE

The Anglo-Sikh Wars were fought between the Sikh Empire and the British East India Company in 1845–46 and 1848–49. They brought two large, disciplined armies into conflict across the Punjab and the river systems of the north-western subcontinent.

The First War ended with the occupation of Lahore and treaties that reduced Sikh territory and placed the state under increasing British supervision. Rebellion at Multan and a wider military rising led to the Second War, the defeat of the remaining Sikh forces and annexation.
