A young British protagonist is swept into the struggles that culminate in the Anglo-Sikh wars of the 1840s. Court instability in the Punjab after the death of Ranjit Singh, rivalry among commanders and the growing power of the East India Company create a political crisis that soon becomes open war.

The story follows campaigning across northern India through marches, fortified positions, river crossings and major battles. Personal adventure is tied to the collapse of Sikh political independence and the expansion of British authority, giving the military action consequences that extend beyond the fortunes of individual soldiers.
