Britain, AD 655. Penda of Mercia has spent decades building alliances and defeating rivals, but Oswiu of Bernicia still resists his dominance in the north. Both kings prepare for a final contest in which smaller kingdoms must decide whom to support and how much independence they are willing to risk.
The confrontation becomes a struggle between two experienced rulers using diplomacy as aggressively as weapons.
