The Viking settlers of the Cotentin try to secure their new lands without provoking a wider war with their Frankish neighbours, but a sudden attack destroys the possibility of peace. Reinforced by other Norse groups, they retaliate and begin pushing into territory whose rulers are determined to drive them back to the sea.

Early successes create dangerous confidence. When allied Viking forces suffer defeat, the Franks are able to concentrate against the settlement itself, forcing warriors, families and dependants to defend the Haugr together. The conflict shows how fragile the first Norse footholds in northern Francia remain before conquest, diplomacy and settlement begin to harden them into a lasting political community.
