Confederate Rangers

by Griff Hosker Book 2 in the Lucky Jack’s Civil War series.

4.3(1,228)

In Virginia in 1863, Confederate partisan rangers raid Union communications and operate close enough to Washington to cause disproportionate alarm. Their independence makes them effective but also politically troublesome. After the discovery of spies and changes in military policy, the men are disbanded and absorbed into regular cavalry service.

The transition forces experienced raiders to accept new officers, formal discipline and missions that are no less dangerous than their earlier work. Scouting behind Union lines exposes them to betrayal from within as well as capture by the enemy. The story places irregular cavalry within the wider Gettysburg campaign, showing how intelligence, reconnaissance and local knowledge could matter as much as battlefield charges.
