After Henry I dies, Stephen of Blois seizes the English throne and the succession crisis spreads rapidly into northern England and Normandy. Alfraed, Earl of Cleveland, returns to support the claims of Henry’s heirs, only to find the north threatened by King David of Scotland while many English lords hesitate over which ruler to recognise.

The novel follows the opening years of the Anarchy through sieges, shifting alliances and private intrigue, showing how a disputed crown turns local rivalries into civil war and makes every oath a potential liability.
