In ancient Hispania, Bruneus, heir to the chief of the Clan of the Eagle, joins a raid that ends in catastrophe and leaves most of the clan’s elders dead. The survivors return home only to find disease has destroyed much of the community they hoped to protect. Forced to rebuild with little more than memory and training, Bruneus must decide what kind of leader he will become as Carthaginian and Roman power begin to reshape the western Mediterranean.

The collapse of the older generation makes leadership a problem of reconstruction rather than inheritance. Bruneus possesses a title but not the experienced council that once gave it meaning, and rebuilding the clan requires choices about food, defence, alliances and the training of younger survivors. The approaching Roman-Carthaginian rivalry ensures that even local recovery will soon be shaped by wider imperial conflict.
