Corunna Campaign / Moore’s Retreat
1808–1809 CE
The Corunna Campaign of 1808–1809 followed Sir John Moore’s advance into Spain in support of Spanish resistance to Napoleon. When a much larger French force moved against him, Moore withdrew his British army across the mountains of Galicia toward the north-western port of Corunna.
The winter retreat was marked by exhaustion, supply failures, straggling and French pursuit. Moore’s army fought the Battle of Corunna on 16 January 1809, holding off Marshal Soult’s forces long enough for evacuation by sea, although Moore was mortally wounded during the battle.
