Whom Gods Destroy
First published 2021
Whom Gods Destroy sends Sertorius to Greece in 97 BC, where a peacetime command proves more dangerous than it first appears. Disappearances, rumours and attacks force him to investigate unrest beneath the surface of a region that remains culturally Greek but politically subject to Roman power.
The book is best read against the background of Roman Greece in the late Republic. It does not need a famous set-piece battle to work: its setting depends on the uneasy relationship between Roman officials and Greek cities after Macedonian independence had ended, and before the wider eastern crisis of the Mithridatic Wars.
