Keane’s Company
First published 2013
Portugal and Spain, 1809. Captain James Keane of the 27th Foot is a talented soldier whose temper, gambling and disregard for convention have left him vulnerable to court martial. Wellington instead gives him an opportunity suited to his abilities: create a small scouting and intelligence unit capable of working beyond the security of the regular army.
Keane recruits men whose criminal records and awkward reputations conceal skills useful in the field. Mapping roads, dealing with guerrillas, gathering intelligence and crossing French-held territory force the new company to become a team quickly, while Keane must prove that unconventional methods can serve Wellington without becoming an excuse for indiscipline or private adventure.
