Upper Bavaria, 1704. Lieutenant Jack Steel leads his grenadiers in the Duke of Marlborough’s army as the campaign against Louis XIV’s forces moves towards the Battle of Blenheim. Steel has earned the trust of his men through courage and discipline, but rank, patronage and rivalry make the officer corps as dangerous as the battlefield.
Marlborough gives Steel a private task: recover a politically explosive letter whose contents could damage the commander-in-chief and the allied war effort. The mission draws Steel through the violence of Blenheim while Major Jennings works against him from within his own side, forcing him to defend both his soldiers and a conception of honour that powerful men are willing to manipulate.
