Historical person

John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough

John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was an English soldier and statesman who commanded allied armies during the War of the Spanish Succession. His victories at Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet made him one of Britain’s most celebrated generals.

Marlborough combined battlefield command with diplomacy among a difficult coalition. His career was inseparable from court politics, the influence of his wife Sarah Churchill and the shifting favour of Queen Anne.

Charles Spencer’s Blenheim reconstructs Marlborough’s 1704 march to the Danube, his cooperation with Eugene of Savoy and the battle that broke the immediate French threat to Vienna. Iain Gale’s Man of Honour puts Jack Steel inside Marlborough’s army at Blenheim and makes a secret commission from the commander part of the novel’s conflict between duty and patronage. Rules of War follows Steel into the 1706 campaign after Ramillies, where Marlborough’s victories create new problems of occupation, intelligence and discipline. Edward Marston’s A Very Murdering Battle moves to 1709, when Marlborough sends Daniel Rawson on missions connected with failed peace talks and the brutal campaign around Malplaquet. Under Siege shows the captain-general after Oudenarde, fighting both the French in Flanders and political enemies at home while the allied army presses the siege of Lille.
