Flanders, 1708. Newly married and seeking advancement, Jack Steel returns to Marlborough’s army for another campaign against France. At Oudenarde his exhausted grenadiers are caught in the confusion of a fast-moving battle, where cavalry, infantry and command decisions can turn apparent victory into sudden annihilation.
The campaign does not end with the fighting in the field. Steel is drawn into a secret assignment amid the operations around Lille, where military necessity, personal ambition and private betrayal intersect. The loyalties suggested by the title are repeatedly tested as he tries to protect his men while serving commanders whose larger purposes are not always disclosed to those ordered to carry them out.
