France, 1940. Captain Peter Lamb and a small detachment are ordered to cover the British retreat as the German advance tears through the Allied position. A delayed demolition of a bridge succeeds in slowing the pursuit but kills refugees attempting to escape, leaving Lamb and his men with a moral burden that cannot be reduced to whether they followed orders.
Cut off from their regiment, the soldiers are sent deeper into a battlefield in which front lines shift by the hour and neither French allies nor British headquarters can provide certainty. Discipline begins to fracture under fear and resentment, forcing Lamb to hold together a troop whose internal conflicts may be as dangerous as the German forces closing around them.
