A banking failure destroys much of Yorke Harberton’s family income and encourages the sixteen-year-old to seek a future in South Africa. When the Second Boer War begins, his riding ability and knowledge of the country lead him from civilian opportunity into scouting and military service.
Yorke’s experiences include the fighting around Kimberley, capture and escape, and the British advance under Lord Roberts towards Pretoria. His personal search for independence is therefore overtaken by a campaign in which railways, mounted reconnaissance, sieges and long-distance movement are as important as set battles.
