William Gale begins life as a foundling and grows up around the sea, first on a fishing smack and then through a series of adventures that carry him far from England. Shipwreck and danger in Southeast Asian waters test his resourcefulness before he eventually reaches India and enlists in a regiment bound for Afghanistan.
Will’s military service places him in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, including the fighting at Peiwar Kotal, Kabul, Maiwand and Kandahar. Capture and escape repeatedly interrupt the campaign, but his experience outside the army has already taught him how to improvise under pressure. The novel connects a seafaring adventure with the hard marches and reverses of Frederick Roberts’s Afghan campaigns.
