John Hawke is living in Dorset when the Duke of Monmouth lands in 1685 and challenges James II. The rebellion draws John into events beyond his local life, and after Monmouth's defeat at Sedgemoor he helps men whose association with the failed rising puts them in danger from the government's pursuit and punishment.

His actions bring him into contact with John Churchill, the future Duke of Marlborough, whose career is beginning to rise even as Monmouth's supporters face execution and exile. John becomes attached to Churchill's household, carrying the consequences of the rebellion into a new phase of service. The novel follows a young man navigating loyalty and opportunity in the aftermath of a failed revolt, when a single act of assistance can be treated as treason while the political loyalties of powerful men remain far more flexible.
