Wulf the Saxon

by G. A. Henty

First published 1895

2.5(5)

Wulf, a young Saxon page in the household of Earl Harold Godwinson, grows into the responsibilities of a thegn during the final years of Edward the Confessor’s reign. Service to Harold carries him from court and his Sussex estate into campaigns in Wales and a dangerous journey to Normandy after Harold is shipwrecked on the French coast.

When Harold becomes king in 1066, Wulf remains with him through the invasions that decide England’s future. He fights against Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge and then marches south to face William of Normandy at Hastings. The novel presents the Norman Conquest through a fictional retainer whose loyalty binds his private fortunes directly to Harold’s fall.
