Book
The Muscovy Chain
First published 2007
Thomas Finbow's master is ordered by the Queen's Council to host Grigori Stanic, an ambassador from Muscovy whose party shares an enthusiasm for hawking. Thomas is given responsibility for a magnificent gold chain intended as a diplomatic gift for Boris Godunov, the dominant figure at the Russian court, only for the jewel to disappear.
The theft threatens relations with the visitors and becomes more serious when a tortured body is discovered on the Downs. Divisions within the Muscovite party, local fear and the appearance of a mysterious stranger leave Thomas unsure whether the missing chain and the murder have the same cause. The final Falconer mystery connects Berkshire to the diplomatic and commercial world linking Elizabethan England with Muscovy.
