At Alesia in 52 BCE, Caesar’s army has enclosed Vercingetorix but is itself threatened by a vast Gallic relief force. Lucius Oppius expects to defend the Roman fortifications. Instead, Caesar sends him north with the agent Livia to seize the Gallic commander’s war chest before it can finance further resistance.
The mission separates Oppius from the decisive battle and forces him to work beside a former lover whose loyalty he cannot assume. Outside Alesia, Caesar and Mark Antony prepare for attacks from both directions; beyond the lines, gold, local knowledge and personal revenge create a second conflict. The novella links military logistics to the survival of the Roman siege and shows victory depending on risks not visible in the formal battle narrative.
