Five years after his first voyage, Harald returns to sea following news of treasure and opportunity in Miklagard, the northern name for Constantinople. The route carries the crew through trading centres, river systems and territories where Norse weapons are valuable but local rulers control passage. Adventure repeatedly gives way to negotiation, treachery and the practical work of keeping a ship’s company alive.
Harald is older but not yet the settled man of the final volume. He must learn that leadership depends on judgement rather than appetite for risk, especially when wealth divides companions who once relied on one another. The middle Viking Saga novel broadens the series from Atlantic raiding to the commercial and military networks linking Scandinavia with Byzantium.
