Emperor’s Axe
By 1038, Harald Sigurdsson has risen to command within the Varangian Guard, the axe-bearing foreign troops sworn to defend the Byzantine throne. As rivalry between emperor and empress draws Constantinople into a struggle for power, Harald must balance loyalty, honour and self-preservation in a court where political defeat can be more dangerous than any battlefield.
Service in the Varangian Guard gives Harald money and military standing, but Constantinople teaches him that success near the throne can be precarious. Palace factions can undo a commander without meeting him in battle. His Byzantine career therefore becomes preparation for his later ambitions in Norway, providing both the wealth and the political caution required by a future king.
