Cast out from Kievan Rus in 1034, Harald Sigurdsson travels south to the Byzantine Empire in search of the wealth and military fame he needs to reclaim Norway. He joins the Varangian Guard and campaigns from Constantinople to the eastern Mediterranean, where service to the emperor brings him into contact with dangerous enemies, court intrigue and the ambitions of Empress Zoe.
Harald’s service in Byzantium is a calculated stage in his larger ambition. The Varangian Guard offers wealth, experience and access to imperial power, but it also exposes him to palace rivalries in which foreign soldiers are useful precisely because they stand outside local factions. Every campaign helps build the reputation he hopes eventually to convert into a Norwegian crown.
