Michael Livingston and Kelly DeVries reconstruct the invasions and battles that made 1066 a decisive year in English history. Beginning with the disputed succession after Edward the Confessor, the book follows Harold Godwinson’s rapid campaign against Tostig Godwinson and Harald Hardrada in the north before turning to William of Normandy’s landing and the Battle of Hastings on 14 October. The Bayeux Tapestry is used alongside chronicles, archaeology and military analysis to test familiar accounts of the campaign.
The volume also functions as a guide to the surviving landscapes of conquest. It explains routes, terrain, weapons, command decisions and the practical problems faced by armies moving across England, then directs readers through the sites associated with Stamford Bridge, Hastings and the Norman invasion. Rather than treating Hastings in isolation, the authors show how exhaustion, timing, logistics and rival claims to kingship connected the northern and southern battles.
