Richard Wendover grows up haunted by the figure and memory of his father, whose apparent presence gives emotional force to a family secret he cannot yet understand. The ‘ghost’ may be supernatural, psychological or the continuing power of a damaged reputation, but it shapes Richard’s choices as he moves toward adulthood and tries to separate inherited guilt from his own identity.
Wren combines Gothic suggestion with a coming-of-age mystery. The novel is less concerned with proving a haunting than with showing how the dead govern the living through silence, pride and unfinished explanations. Richard’s courage is tested by the need to investigate his family rather than by a conventional battlefield.
