Priests of the White Kendah seek Allan Quatermain’s help against the Black Kendah and their elephant-god Jana. When Lady Ragnall is drawn into the Kendah conflict, Allan travels with Lord Ragnall and Hans to recover her, destroy the supposedly invulnerable elephant and prevent the rival people from annihilating the community that guards the ivory image of the Child.
The story combines rescue, tribal war and supernatural belief with the practical dangers of a heavily armed expedition. Its White and Black Kendah are fictional, but the narrative reflects the period’s fascination with remote African religions, ivory, exploration and the violent disruption produced by outsiders carrying modern weapons.
