After the death of his only son, Allan Quatermain leaves settled life and joins Sir Henry Curtis, Captain Good and the Zulu warrior Umslopogaas on an expedition into the African interior. An underground river carries the party into the isolated kingdom of Zu-Vendis, where the rival queens Nyleptha and Sorais draw the travellers into a civil war over succession, love and political power.

Published as the immediate sequel to King Solomon’s Mines, the novel gives Quatermain his final adventure in the character’s internal chronology. Haggard combines expedition narrative, lost-world fantasy and dynastic conflict, while the fictional kingdom reflects Victorian ideas about exploration, empire and supposedly undiscovered African societies.
