David I of Scotland

1084–1153

David I was king of Scots from 1124 to 1153 and one of the most transformative rulers of medieval Scotland. He founded and endowed monasteries, encouraged the development of royal burghs, introduced new administrative practices and granted lands to Anglo-Norman and continental nobles. During the English civil war known as the Anarchy, he supported the claim of his niece Empress Matilda and extended Scottish influence southwards, although his army was defeated at the Battle of the Standard in 1138.

Nigel Tranter’s David the Prince fictionalises David’s rise and the political world that shaped his kingship. He also appears in novels about the Anarchy, where Scottish intervention complicates the struggle between Stephen and Matilda. Fiction often treats David’s reign as the beginning of a more “modern” Scottish monarchy, though his reforms developed through existing Gaelic institutions as well as imported feudal and ecclesiastical practices.

In Griff Hosker’s Irish War, a fast-moving story which takes the reader from the reclamation of Scotland to the Welsh Marches following the fortunes of the Warlord, his son and the men who march behind their banners.
