Alfred Duggan traces Rome from the legendary settlement associated with Romulus through the monarchy and republic to the creation of a Mediterranean empire. Written for younger readers, the book explains how Roman government, citizenship, military organisation and social customs developed as a small Italian city absorbed its neighbours and defeated rival powers.
The later chapters follow the transformation from republic to imperial rule and consider the roads, towns, law, engineering and administration that held the Roman world together. Duggan also examines the strains created by conquest, civil war, religious change and the division of the empire, presenting Roman civilisation as both an extraordinary political achievement and a society sustained by warfare, hierarchy and slavery.
The book was first published in 1964 for younger readers as part of the Major Cultures of the World collection.
